So, we all have mentioned what we've seen as the short comings. But is there much good in this book?
It is very similar to a lot of our other stories, like Haunting of Hill House and such where it makes you think and ask "Is this real, or is it due to crazy people?".
You cannot say it lacks for detail, which I feel sometimes does lead to being a negative...
I am impressed that Waters can switch genres and still make a decent story (I sadly cant say a good story, but Ill give her decent), as this was her first ghost story if what I read on her was correct.
What else was good in this book?

I really enjoyed the "outside narrator" aspect, though I doubt I'll ever go searching for another. I thought it was a clever idea. However, it did lead to the book being more boring than if we had followed Caroline for example.
I thought the book was pretty good when things were actually happening! As you said the overly detailed writing was a big negative for me and I was quite bored for the first half or so of the book.
I will say the scene with the mother upstairs in the room reeeeally creeped me out, so I guess that counts as "good"...
Thinking back about it, I would agree with Matt that the story is actually pretty good when there are things going on, but the emphasis on detail makes the action scenes get lost in a sea of description.
