Hey guys and girls
Unfortunately I caught a stomach bug from my roomate and couldn't make it to class today but I thought I'd get yalls input on the blog. I'm pretty set on my idea I'm just worried about it being too broad. I'm planning on exploring the theme of possession in The Haunting of Hill House and using some other stories we have read to discuss different types and aspects of possession. I am planning on focusing on the house's possession of Eleanor and Theodore's "possession" of Eleanor's identity while using other stories/movies to explore other types of possession (i.e demonic, partial possession, supernatural, etc.). I wanted to see what y'all thought about the different types of possession and if you guys saw any other major examples of possession in Hill House.
Thanks!
Matt

I've read that the idea of the "loss of self" is the fear behind things like possession. I think Theo's possession is perfect for this thought. I'm excited to see how you discuss this possession. I think you probably have enough for with just this one story, but we've read a couple of others. "The Thing on the Doorstep" would be a different type of possession I think, especially since the minds swap rather than both being present in one body. There's also a "friendly" possession in "The April Witch". I think this is a cool idea, good luck!
In a recent article in The Internet Review of Science Fiction, Joe Nazare argues that Eleanor is possessed not by the house itself but by the ghost of Sophia Crain, Hugh Crain's eldest daughter, to whom Hugh's horrid anti-sex primer was addressed, and who is apparently the only Crain family member to have died in the house.
